What are the advantages of a Sunroom over a typical room addition?
-
A room surrounded with light and full view of the outdoors is a lifestyle choice to be enjoyed every day of the year.
-
A room for all seasons becomes the focal point of a home. It is the year round alternative to the seasonal outdoor deck or patio.
-
Enjoy the natural beauty of all four seasons. Open up a view.
-
Experience the energizing quality of a room flooded with natural light. Enjoy the beauty of ever changing natural light.
Can I put a hot tub in the sunroom?
Yes, that has been done with success. The tub is a source of high humidity so there is the risk of condensation forming in cold weather. However, the painted aluminum framing and glass of the solarium are very easily maintained and highly resistant to any deterioration in a humid environment.
Am I limited by the size and shape?
Yes and no. There are structural limits imposed by snow and wind loads. A large roof for example may require extra beams or trusses to support the weight. Shape also has some limits but our Skywall system allows us to be quite creative.
Is there a rough cost per square foot?
Not really as there are so many variables. However, a "typical" 8' x 12' Skywall solarium can cost about $22,000 including installation.
Do I have a full warranty and for how long?
A Skywall solarium system carries our 10 year warranty on structural integrity, water leaks, material defects and workmanship. Our Super Sealed insulating glass is warrantied for 10 years against seal failure.
Can I do the installation myself or should I have Central Glass do the installation?
-
Most of our customers use our installation service which puts total responsibility for quality of the finished project in our hands. However there are owners/builders who prefer to handle the installation themselves and realize the financial savings that come with doing that.
-
The Skywall system can be purchased pre-cut and ready to assemble. Our installation guide has the instructions needed to complete a quality installation.
If I decide to have Central Glass do the installation, how long can I expect it to take?
It usually takes two men 5 to 7 working days for a "typical" installation.
Do I need a building permit?
This may depend on your local jurisdiction but the answer is yes. This project should be treated as any other addition to your home. Local authorities may also require a consulting engineer's review and stamp of our drawings in order for the permit to be issued. We arrange for that to be done. Those professional fees can range from $500 to $1500.
Do I need to worry about leaks?
Our Skywall systems are designed to ensure that does not happen. Our experience is no leaks even in extreme ocean front exposure to high wind and rain. Our confidence in the durability of the Skywall system is demonstrated in our 10-year warranty.
Can I expect any problems with heating and cooling?
-
Heat loss in winter and heat gain in summer are serious issues which need to be addressed. The glass options that we recommend are aimed at maximizing your comfort from that point of view.
-
Opening windows for ventilation are essential.
-
Opening skylights are very effective for venting hot air as the chimney effect draws outside air in through open windows. Skylights can be manually or electrically operated.
-
Thermostat controlled extraction fans can remove hot air from the room. We suggest planning for at least on air exchange per hour.
-
The room does need a heat source. Radiant in floor heating is very effective, but extending the existing forced air or electric heat into a solarium addition is common.
